Sherrill’s favorite family Christmas Recipe

“One of our family’s traditional Christmas recipes is Peppernuts or Pfeffernusse. These little German anise/spice cookies can be eaten by the handful! We gather as many family members as possible together and make double batches to share with family and friends. Even the little kids can help by rolling the ropes of dough and placing the miniature cookies on the trays. It is a long day but the aroma lasts in our house for days!”

Peppernuts

1 cup shortening                 
1 tsp. soda
4 cups brown sugar            

2 T. hot water
4 eggs                                
1 tsp. cinnamon
6 drops anise oil                
1 tsp. cloves
6 2/3 cups flour                 
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cream of tartar

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs; beat well. Add oil and soda dissolved in water. Add flour, spices, & cream of tartar. Chill for an hour and then roll dough into long thin ropes. Chill again. Slice dough less than 1/4 inch thick. Bake on ungreased cookie sheets at 375 degrees for 8-10 min. Cool. Store in air-tight containers. Will keep for several months if well hidden.

Yields 1 1/2 gal.
