Interview with Vanessa Walker, Independent Beauty Consultant
Tell us about yourself: I’m a Christian Mom, blessed with a loving, energetic toddler and a great husband! I’m the first college graduate of my family, having earned a BS degree in Elementary Education. I had the priviledge of working as a substitute teacher in numerous school districts near my home in Berwick, PA., right up until our son was born. Now, when I’m not spending my time raising our son at home, and working my Mary Kay business, you can find me either teaching the competition program at a local dance studio, or actively engaging in one of my hobbies. My favorite hobbies include gardening, cooking, crafts (crocheting, knitting, etc.), reading, scrapbooking, and blogging!
Give us a description of your company: I LOVE having my own business as an Independent Beauty Consultant. How do I work my business? I teach women about skin care, and ways they can fulfill their skin care, body care, and makeup needs. I do this either through one-on-one facials/consultations, or group skin care and makeover classes. My customers can also enjoy earning gifts and product discounts by hosting online and/or parties in the comfort of their homes. Another aspect of my business that I enjoy is teaching women about our founder, how she started this company and how they too can start their own cosmetic business!
How long have you been in business? I have had my business since August 2008, and haven’t looked back since!! I’m currently building my own team and have recently earned the title of Senior Beauty Consultant!
How long have you been a Christian & share a little about your faith: I have been a Christian my whole life! Born and raised a Presbyterian, I love growing in my faith with God and Jesus, and I thank God everyday for the blessings He has given me throughout my life!
How has your faith in God inspired and helped grow your business? I started my business at a time when my family was going through a financial hardship, and I was unable to continue my substitute teaching position. When things just didn’t seem to be getting any better, I looked to God and asked for his help and guidance. As that door closed and things seemed financially impossible, God opened a window and I was given the information and the means to start my own business. Since then, God has blessed me with my successful business and a means of helping with my family’s financial needs, not to mention having the ability to raise our son at home! I thank Him for that everyday!
What Advice can you give to other moms thinking about starting their own business? Mary Kay Ash said: “There are three types of people in this world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened. We all have a choice. You can decide which type of person you want to be. I have always chosen to be in the first group.” (Mary Kay: You Can Have It All 1997 Calendar)
