I always recommend solid colors.
This does not mean matching colors…only solid colors.
Solid colors help keep a photograph timeless AND everyone can choose their favorite color to wear. Polo shirts are easy shirts to suggest because they come in such a wide variety of colors. Along with solid color shirts you need to pick a matching pant color. If you decide to wear denim or khaki make sure everyone is in the same shade. If someone has dark denim and someone has very light denim that takes the focus away from the important part of the picture…the faces of the people in the portrait!
With all of that said you can wear a print, but be careful with it. For portraits of two people I would recommend one person wearing the print and the other wearing a shirt in a coordinating color. If there is a family of three (mom, dad, and one child) you can dress the child in the print and have the parents in solid colors coordinating with the child. You basically don’t want one person in a big family wearing a print because the attention will be drawn to that one person.
Also, with pictures taken during the holiday I always recommend wearing something that will not make the portrait a “holiday” portrait (i.e. wearing green and red). When you pick other colors not based on a holiday theme the portrait can stay up the entire year and people will not ask if it was taken specifically for your holiday cards. Again, think of your yearly family portrait as something you can use year round, if need be.
