This book details the life of the Amana Colonies in the late 1800’s. There are 2 main characters: Berta Schumacher, a privileged young woman sent to live at the colonies against her will and Johanna Ilg, a young woman who has spent her life in the Amana colonies but is longing to experience the outside world.
There are so many Amish stories out there right now and I have read many of them. The Amana Colonies are very different from the Amish. There are some similarities to the Amish, but I had never heard of the Amana colonies before and it was very interesting to read about them.
One of my favorite quotes from the book is: “God understands you…He created you, and He loves you. You must always remember that.”
I recommend this book for those interested in history and other cultures.
Thanks to Bethany House for a copy to review.
