So I don’t know about you but for me and those around me 2011 has seemed to get off to a bit of a rocky start. When a New Year comes it brings the excitement for a new beginning, new resolutions, new changes. But then nine days later it occurs to you that you are still the same, those around you are still the same, struggles are still struggles and sin is still sin. And because of all this nothing is ever easy, simple, perfect, or uncomplicated.

Hebrews 12:1-3 has this encouragement for us:

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

If anyone knew about dealing with “rocky times” it was Jesus! And yet he persevered through everything–even unto the cross. So when illness, accidents, problems, misunderstandings, financial difficulties, or any of the millions of rocks and “weights and sins that so easily beset us” get thrown your way just remember–

You have a cloud of witnesses cheering you on to press toward the finish line. The race will be hard, and long, but persevere, get up when you fall down, and one day you’ll hear those precious words, “Well done thou good and faithful servant”
