Thursday’s Top Ten: Top Ten Ways to be More Productive While Working from Home

1) Work in 90 minute spurts, then take a 30 minute break.  Yes, it’s hard to carve a full 90 minutes to work on just work, but this is the key to being actually productive when working.
2) Stop working.  Work whatever your set period of 90 minute work spurts in a day (think 2 or 3), and then be done.  Really.  You’ll find that this is more productive than “working” 10 hours and not getting anything done due to distractions.
3) Sleep enough at night.  Easier said than done, right?  But sleep is very important to productivity.
4) Take a nap.  Yes, you.  Taking naps may actually change your life.
5) Buy another computer.  This might be out of your price range, but hear me out.  If you can buy a new laptop or iPad, use one of your computers for internet and play and the other for work.  Seth Godin talked about it this week.  We’re working towards this solution in my house.
6) Take some time to clean your work area up.  A cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind.
7) Unclutter your mind by writing down a list.  Write a list at night before you go to sleep.  Amend it when you wake up.  Putting it down on a list will help you get it done, and help your mind focus on the item you are working on at the time.
8 ) Eat well, and not while you are working.  Food is distracting, and you eat more of it when you are doing something else besides just eating.  Use one of your 30 minute breaks to eat good quality food.
9) Spend a few minutes every month thinking creatively about your work, your work space, and see if there’s anything you can do to improve your processes.
10) Turn the TV, radio and any other distractor off if you can.  You might think you are multitasking.  Really, you are just forcing your brain to constantly jump from distraction to work.  That doesn’t even sound productive!

Interesting you mentioned Seth.. My day job is at American Express and he came to speak about Poke the Box.

Oh and I so agree with #10! Multitasking is just fragmented thinking
